What controls Turbo Core in Xeons?

Bit off topic, but before this rig (ASRock EP2C612 WS) I had the good ol z9pe-d8 WS with 2x ES (B0) 2665...rocked at the time. But now with 2x 18 cores/72 threads (e5-2696 v3) a lot of my programs were defaulting to one processor, due to the windows processor group max 64 thread count BS. Well can confirm, (just fired up Maya and Vray after bit of a hiatus), Vray is absolutely maxed out 100% on all 72 threads, and GOOOES like no tomorrow if you use hybrid cpu/gpu rendering. Yet to test Arnold, or Nuke and some other things. Adobe..well start turning off cores, it still sucks! Hope that helps! (Whew so relieved 72 threads aren't just for cinebench bragging!).😱
 
Disable hyperthread when gaming it's a beast best bang at sli 1080ti 3 ok 4 move to another platform or disable more cores
 
Uhhm am embarassed to say sitting on one gtx 770 4gb and still playing 1080p 144hz...guess all them cpu's ate up the gaming budget! (ok have 3x! e5-2696 v3), still the old 2x e5-2665 v1, and around 35 TB hdd of storage..can't get too paranoid about backup! Have a proper ips uhd monitor for work of course, but yeah, some 1080ti's in sli on a widescreen would be pretty sweet! For vid editing too! But one thing at a time! Finally have some rendering power here...gaming has to come later..
 
More a BF4/BF1 FPS player..but yeah. Looking forward to the hack tho, rendering on those beasts for the first time was awesome (at stock! 2.78!)..happy iff I can make 3.1 ghz...of course bricking my setup would..wow that would really suck! around 3.5k usd straight down the toilet! 1k just in ecc rdimm ram! So will play it safe for now, waiting for those Bios chips..this is my work machine also...

Edit; my 3rd e5-2696 v3 was supposed to be for sale, to help with upgrade (live in Norway, currently listing for..ok a lot of money! 5k usd? retail?), but since threadripper, nobody interested. And the whole setup for 2x e5-2665 v1ES with mobo and 64gb ram can be sold for max, say 1k? Well I'll just hold on to them and maybe pick up another e5-2696 v3, for a small render farm. Got my e5-2696's for around 750 USD a piece, but prices going up. Screw threadripper! Super stoked with the 2696's, even more so iff I get the all-turbo working. Just NEED ONE MORE (can never have too much rendering power, ya know!)!

Edit; Ram ECC Rdimm prices are a bit of a killer tho..for a render farm, if I was to do it again, maybe threadripper....had to cough up 9000 nok or 1085 USD for 64gb of kingston valueram, the good stuff. Were no really good ebay options, pretty much all the same price...and given likelyhood of exchanging a kit (yes had to, from a 600 usd kit to almost double that), can't really ebay or taobao ecc ram.

Well so far as I know cannot unlock yet! V4! (as many have said already!) . And e5-2696 v3 prices are now 1100-1300 on ebay! But patience my friend, wait 3-4 years and they (v4) will be pretty much worthless! So patience, my friend...regardless, even with v3 processors you're looking at a max? 25% increase in performance, at great risk..so don't stress it. Not like you're going to magically double or triple your performance..the most you'll get is some bragging rights...

Calmez vous compadre! 25% maximum ce n'est pas grand chose! Go make a cafe au lait or something while you wait for renders 🙂.

Weeell those prices went up pretty fast! e5-2696 v3 are now 1100 USD to 1400 USD on ebay..Taobao crapping out on me at the moment..got mine for around USD 750 each, which I thought was a bit too much at the time, off ebay, but not having any Taobao experience, and + agent fees, just went for it. What a shame. Guess there was just some incremental performance increase from v3 to v4. Anecdotal tho...
 
All, should get back to serious business of helping thread contributors and those wanting to do the hack..my bad for sidetracking! At least can post that VRAY works on more than 64 threads (very important for those who render in say C4D, Max, Maya, Houdini etc!) as that is potentially a deal-breaker using windows). Maya and Vray tested good on 74 threads as posted before. This is still 'pre-mod' on my part. Would be nice to see an amalgamated how-to on dual cpu mobos, iff and when I work it out will post. Candidates incluede ep2C612 WS (mine of course), z10pe-d8 WS, of course, and like a million supermicro boards. Can mention that gigabyte has quite a few as well, but not as popular. Tallking about c612 platform/chipset...not x99.

Happy modding! Will post rendering results for Houdini, Mental ray, etc in a bit. Just need to find a benchmark. Note haven't done the flash thing yet...

Well on an imported archviz, with Vray in maya, it only takes 2 minutes on hybrid render (lowly gtx 770 and 2 x e5-2696 v3), for basically production ready 2.5k render. In fact, using IR render is slower...so go figure! The only reason peps should even be here in the first place is;
1) They are rendering!
2) They are doing heavy physics simulations..for..I don't know..most would do it at work? Uni?
3) VFX which is the same as above + rendering..at home a small render farm or crazy mhz is for pre-vis? More than that and need the cloud!
4) Archviz peps who can't/wont afford the cloud rendering (e.g. architects, interior designers etc etc...all those who couldn't hack maya or max or houdini in school!)!

Etc etc. Will say that hybrid render is quite a bit faster! Depending on settings.

Just made this trick to x99 taichi + e5-v2683 and have some trouble with hyper-v.
All cores work at 3.0 when needed at host os.
But guest os says that speed is 2.0ghz. I used x39 microcode but when i rename "mcupdate_GenuineIntel.dll", system can start only in Safe mode.
So i left this file unchanged.

How to get turbo boost works at guest vm-s?
I have some 2012r2 and win10.
 
You lucky man, my host system not boot when hyper-v installed (only in safe mode). VMware player not work proper also with modded UEFI. If I flash original UEFI all work ok

If your motherboard has DXECSM select DXECSM

2-Select DxeCore or DxeCsm on list (choose which one is available)
3-Select ffs file
4-Click insert button
5-Save image file
 
i tried the dxe core method and did not go
I opened in mmtool the bios image we put in and we salvaged, after which we finished with ubu
I have a CSM DXE, in which I insert ffs, I save, then open again in ubu and save
The problem of falsh, although I chose for bios flashback, does not start writing bios
at the old asrock x99 ocf plate, this method went like a fire, but asus does not seem to want
 
does anyone know how to insert ffs in bios to asus motherboards?
and another question: how can I learn the stepping of a v3, C0 or C1 processor without installing it?
