Asrock X370 Taichi weird sound problem

Have a strange problem with X370 Taichi board where headphones (multiple models) have no sound when plugged in the motherboard audio but only in one (right) speaker/driver. multiple headphones, both front and backend audio ports, same headphones work just fine on other devices.

Any ideas? ASRock support happy to replace the motherboard but not offering any suggestions

Try unplugging the front audio ports from the motherboard and see if that makes any difference.

Thank you, same problem with front panel cable unplugged which makes me think something is misconfigured on my end. Since I explicitly looked for good onboard code, this is somewhat annoying

I would double check that something isn't set to mono output and make sure it's stereo headphones. It might not be as obvious as it should be. I would also check the ASRock support section online for any updated audio drivers for the board.

I can test it on my X370 Professional Gaming a bit later if you're still having issues. I use a dedicated card but I can still fiddle with the software provided with the board, in which I'm not too familiar with.

I don't recall noticing any issues with my Taichi when I use the onboard sound, but that isn't terribly often. I'm using using HDMI passthrough on the GPU.

thank you all! still having an issue- tried multiple headphones (that work fine in other devices) with same issue when using the MB sound , sound is only in the 'left' speaker/driver , consistently.

when looking at configuration, everything I see says stereo.. where else could I check

if I avoid MB sound and instead is GPU passthrough, same headphones give me stereo sound in both speakers.

Did you uninstall and reinstall the drivers from the support site yet? I assume you are running Windows 10.

If so, Realtek high definition audio driver ver:8308 is what you're looking for. These drivers were released this year and may solve the issue. If not, I would suggest you RMA the board or simply use a discrete sound card, which are relatively cheap anyway.

You didn't say how long you have had this board, but you can return it to most retailers withing 30 days and just get a new one. I'd only RMA it with Asrock if you have to, as you will likely be sent a refurbished motherboard back (and you will be without the motherboard longer because motherboard RMA departments aren't known for their speed).

If you ran Linux and it also didn't work that could still be unrelated but that would be quite coincidental. Personally, if the board is fine otherwise I wouldn't think twice about buying an HT Omega or mid-range SB/Xonar for it. That's me though, stock should be fine for a replacement but it may still take a little time.

I can see and understand both ways:

"I bought X, and I expect everything to work as it should" and you'd be 100% correct

or

"I don't feel like waiting for a replacement so I'll just go with what works" (upgraded sound card) is also valid and might be the quicker and easier solution in the long run. there is a chance that the replacement ends up having issues too... just something else to consider.

I hear you - the board works fine otherwise and was bought 3 months ago and I am somewhat annoyed that ASrock does not do cross shipping ( take my credit card for deposit ,ship me a product now, so I not out of service for two weeks). So I am leaning towards leaving motherboard alone to avoid the hassle of getting everything working again (once it works don't touch it philosophy). I originally hoped it was software problem which does not appear to be the case. Funny feeling is that I had two Asus boards for my 2600k and 3770k builds which worked fine for years (2600k is collecting dust in the basement to be got rid of, 3770k I turn on form time to time to put OS updates on as my backup gaming desktop pared with GTX 970, probably to be disposed of too ) while supposedly much fancies Taichi had issues after 3 months. luck of the draw I guess.

for sound, my brother wants to gift me with modi+ magni stack as birthday gift so I will give that a try

thank you to all who helped!
