Got one of those weird fake Microsoft Security warning screens

Using Brave, one of those overlays popped up, blocking everything. Big colorful flashing things with an 800 number. Couldn't click back, change tabs, or close the browser normally.

Had to crash the browser in TaskManager.

Brave restarted OK and the screen didn't come back.

MalwareBytes is running but hasn't found anything.

Plenty of my customers have had the messages but I've never figured out where precisely they originated (in terms of what the customer did to get the message to appear), and I've never experienced it for myself when browsing on my own PC (though for a very long time I've been using either NoScript and/or UBO, these days just the latter). The closest thing I've had was when I once mis-spelt the domain name of a mail hosting provider's webmail system.

I've seen it happen a few times in recent months from people clicking a fake ad on Facebook. Just end the browser processes in Task Mgr as you did, then on browser reload, if it offers to restore past tabs, obviously don't restore that one and be careful about any just prior that might've redirected to that one.

No malware was present, just the social engineering warning webpage that jammed up the browser.
