I need a more simple set up

I currently have 5.1 Polk Audio T series 5.1 w Sony STR-DN1080 AVR. I need to downsize to something much smaller in footprint while minimizing the loss of sound quality and soundstage. Our main use is TV/Movies or streaming music.

This is of course my wife's idea. She wants something "elegant" and "less claustrophobic looking". What would you do if you were me?

My thoughts:
-Two bookshelf speakers bolted to the wall next to TV, smaller sub, smaller AVR
- Sound bar w sub

Budget - $600-700. I think my current system sells new on Amazon for around $700 or so, plus AVR so maybe I could sell all of it for $4-500 on Marketplace. I'd like to not spend more than net $200 on this trade overall.

You aren't going to be happy no matter what you buy. Get a sound bar, as you should be able to find one in your price range.

I would steer you towards a 5.1 set that has smaller front and surround speakers and a dedicated sub. It would be more flexible with putting the sub anywhere, and you'd lose the two big front speakers. Something like the Energy 5.1 or Klipsch should give you adequate volume and surround. I have assembles a 5.1 Klipsch system with a wireless subwoofer and it sounds very good, volume is more than adequate, and it is rather unobtrusive except for the surround speaker wires.
