in-joke: linus will now have to disclose his investment in FW every time he presents another brand's desktop review [free advertising for FW].

Yeah still not REALLLY getting the framework SFF desktop but another solid case option is another solid case option I guess (and the Strix Halo custom boards are gon b gobbled up by AI folks).

you have to wonder what kind of relationship framework has with amd for them to disrupt their normal product cycle to make a not specifically in their wheelhouse product on short notice and fast tracked.
the strix halo is kinda worth it, but the initial sales volume will be so small that the costs seemingly cant be worth it unless amd is paying them to do this. small is nimble but theoretically any number of big name system integrators could have handled this. or else such a small run isnt profitable for anyone but framework.

and yeah this does seem like a very targeted shot at apple and nv ai sales. you have to imagine all of the strix halo first wafer run has already been bought out by the oems/si/boutique.

ifixit teardown

(edit: lol at the OLPC on the shelves behind him. there were so many cool idea in that thing, it doesnt surprise me that someone from the team is at framework.)

People have been saying for years that once DDR6 comes around, memory will no longer be user upgradable and will come soldered with the CPU and mobo. I think AMD may be testing the theory or giving everyone a sneak peek at our buy-once-forever-hold-your-peace PC desktop future 🙁

That's not totally true.....
There will be LPCAMM2 as well, so the DIMMs on the motherboard will be replaced by it.......

Nirav q&a after feb showcase
  • pcie will remain x4 to comply with the standard
  • phones wont come until they can be sure they can actually make a real change
  • tariffs shouldnt affect them too badly as they planned for changes and are primarily working with compal in taiwan.
  • printers arent a possible product due to no profitability
  • lpcam memory not possible for strix halo, modular dimms would halve the bandwith per amd engineer after FW asked for lpcam
  • 20year+ end goal is framework tractor. (suck it johndeer)

FW 12 internals
kb/tp deck/cover is not wired but uses pogo pins so just lift and replace with no cable connectors to re-insert.
tool-less ssd and ram sockets.
replaceable display panel.
12.2" 1920x1200 touchscreen
intel 13gen (mostly for affordability)
up to 48gb ram
ssd m.2 2230 up to 2tb

if this is below $600(barebones) i may have to buy one.

FW 12 pricing

framework 12 review, bit unoptimized in power usage and battery life.
the display color range makes it a pass for me, i want a replacement for my 2in1 for digital art and not being able to trust the color makes it too problematic for the price. not sure how this is supposed to replace chromebook ewaste with the total price after accessories.

hardware unboxed tests the switch2 panel
very slow response time and worse blurring than switch1. probably due to no overdrive to reduce battery draw to extend play time.
slightly better color coverage than s1

just wait for the oled s2.

new framework products
