Ah, i see. I'm learning, but you can keep your existing switches and everything, and just wire in the relay. This would work good for a garage door and some lights.

I want to be able to dim the bulbs as well. I need to do more research.
 
I am liking the GE wall switches. My house has really funky wiring and they are very accommodating and pretty easy to install. I haven't had any problems with my Cree bulbs but it's nice still having a wall switch that works. I tried getting one of those buttons and it was a battery eating monster. Lasting less than the return period at Lowes! So it went right back and I am focused on switches going forward.

One of my switches is a dimmer and it works pretty good. The fan switch is the only weird one.
 
If you ST guys haven't tried CoRE yet, I highly recommend it. I am almost done moving my rules from Rule Machine over to CoRE and the power CoRE gives you is unbelievable. I probably only know 10% of it at this point.

Would you guys be interested in me starting a dedicated SmartThings thread? I know the Wink aspect of this thread is pretty much dead, but maybe we should have our own thread.

Me too. I haven't bought the ST hub yet, as I'm waiting for it to drop back down to the $50 price range, but am starting to look for deals on relays, dimmers, switches, and some bulbs here and there. Definitely wanting to get into this hobby.

Regarding the $50 price point - I am not sure what ST's plans are, but I think that was a holiday deal and was designed to steal sales from the new Wink Hub 2 during the holiday season. It might be awhile before you see it at $50 again; however, it does often go on sale for around $70.
 
Yeah, its $74.99 now. Going to hold out for another week or two and keep scanning slickdeals but may just end up getting one and starting the adventure/challenge. 🙂 There are many pages of good info here to keep me busy until then.

Wow that CoRE thing is a deep well. I found a good guide to help me install it, but I would love some overall Smartthings tips including CoRE tips in a thread if you have any.

I figured the $50 thing was simply a Black Friday week deal to build the install base. I would recommend it at full price and have to my friends.

I'll try to get a thread together in the next couple of days. I've got 7 or 8 pistons running in CoRE and they are running very well. The thing is insanely deep and I probably will try to keep it simple for now, but I can see developing some decently complex lighting pistons for my garage once I ring it with motion sensors.

I think I mentioned it before, but SmartTiles is another must have. The next version will be called ActionTiles and will apparently be something you have to pay for to use.
 
New to this site. Looking forward to @IndyColtsFan new thread for SmartThings. I've been torn between Wink 2 and ST but reading more here it sounds like I'll stick with ST. I bought the kit for $145 and was contemplating returning it and getting Wink 2. I'll be starting with the ST kit, Arlo PRO (4 camera system) and Ecobee 3. I'm sure it won't be long before I add some switches and other items. It's too bad MyQ garage door openers aren't working with ST right now.
 
@IndyColtsFan No need to be sorry. I for one understand being a little tied up. Hence not having installed my Arlo Pro cameras, Ecobee or ST at all. I also picked up some Vizio Crave 360 speakers to play with. Last post here. I'll see you in the other thread.
 
I haven't purchased any home automation devices yet.... but I've been very, very interested lately.

Any idea on either wall outlets or plugs that allow me to control on/off and schedules? Also, any idea on dimmer switches that support both traditional bulbs as well as LEDs that allow me to control via an app/service/hub?

That is the basic usage of any home automation system - they all do that. With LEDs, you simply just need to be aware that there may be limitations as some are not "dimmable" -- but there are even smart LED bulbs.

It all depends on what you want/need.

Some smart switches demand a specific current load, which is usually below the level of a single LED bulb. I've been using the GE smart switches, which do not have this problem. Overloading isn't much of an issue with LEDs, of course. Most seem to be designed for a typical 15A load, though if you're driving motors, that's a more specialized switch in some cases.

One real problem I ran into is that I wanted to replace a few real switches with smart switches that didn't actualy do any physical switching. For example, in one room I have a TV by the door, so that's stuck on a switched outlet. And a lamp across the room, with an OSRAM smartbuilb in it. The only switch I found that would basically pass power all the time, based on settings, is the defunct Quicky TAPT. WIthout the physical switch, my wife is constantly switching off smart bulbs... kinda defeats the purpose.

I just got the Relay for xmas, and for the life of me, no matter how I wire it into the wall, tried different outlets, I can't get the damn thing to get power. I hook it up as their guide shows, but no LED light, no power to try the "test" buttons, nothing.

Anyone else have luck with this?

I've had mine for two years and moved it once, no problem. Well, except for tightening it down too much so that the contacts on the base unit didn't.

Have you tried contacting Wink support? They may have additional diagnostic steps and/or set up a replacement if you have a faulty unit.
 
mine did not power either until I moved to another of the 3 slots available..I think the contacts are pretty touchy between the base and the wink relay itself...
if you had the test buttons work then I'd say you have power

I'm already on my second unit. Wink isn't able to provide info on the wiring, so I might need to call an electrician. Tried it on two switch locations already.
 
Two Questions for the group:
1. Any issues running Wink 2 hub and ST together?
2. Do both hubs provide integration to Logitech Harmony Hub?
