Does Ryzen potentially "kill" the unofficial consumer Xeon DIY PC builds?

Nice to see AMD offering up some serious competition again but the X99 platform still has some legs. I just picked up a ES Intel Xeon E5-2630 v4 $150... cna't beat that yet. ;p

Seriously though Ryzen isn't killing anything but it self right now. If I were you I wouldn't worry to much about whats killing what, and if you have a Xeon be happy with what you've got and that you are even lucky enough to have such an over powered piece of beautiful hardware.Nothing wrong with supporting AMD either though.

I have an i5 7500 and its great with my RX 480. But I cant deny the temptation of getting the most bang-for-the-buck CPU/platform performance. The Xeons caught my attention and I quickly found myself comparing my "hypothetical" plan with an actual Ryzen build.

I guess I could have used a better word than "kill", I'll take the word "invade" instead as suggested by someone here. Ultimately I'm not partisan w.r.t the CPU battles. Just an average bang-for-the-buck seeker.

Ryzen made anything but e5 v3-v4 ES irrelevant. Seriously, they will even make a bank of those moralists that wont touch an ES even if its a 2699 v3 at 50 bucks. Its really a win win for them.

Now if we had 2P am4 boards, THAT would put the final nail in the cheapo e5 build coffin

Ps: even 1x1700 is stronger than 2x 2670s v1 and probably v2 too. Its no contest really. And you can run that 1700 even on a a320 board. The whole value proposition of v1 and v2 2xe5 xeons got demolished. Only those having an agenda and the very owners that dont want the remaining value in their already built 2xE5 v1-v2 builds would advice for these setups anymore.

When all the big names will get rid of their v3s for cheap we can talk again about intel being back in the cheapo workstation builds again.

Me either.. I used to get them every now and then until the whole it is illegal shenanigans. That and I got a couple pre es E5 8c/16t that wont work or post on any motherboard. which I ended up loosing out several hundred bucks on the deal.So never again for me. besides new tech is at such a reasonable price these days now there is no need for ES's any longer.

Right, but not everyone sells at list, and especially not when the rate-limiting component right now is motherboard availability - it helps to move inventory if you sell at lower than MSRP 🙂

Not sure what to say about DIY (I haven't checked prices lately).

But using a LGA 2011 Xeon in a Pre-built workstation is definitely going to be a lot cheaper than Ryzen. Furthermore, E5 Xeon can use the super cheap surplus ECC RDIMMs (about $40 for 32GB (8 x 4GB) or $110+ for 64GB (8 x 8GB)).

2670 V1 is 5 years old now. I hope a 1700 defeats it handily.

E5 2670 has more memory bandwidth, but the 1700 has greater CPU performance.

P.S. For a cheap gamer box I would go E5 1620 (4C/8T) or E5 1650 (6C/12T).....both of which have greater single thread and are cheaper than the E5 2670.

Deal alerts are the way to go. I used to read that site religiously and subscribe to their Twitter, but there's no need now if you can set up real time alerts.

Is there really a significant memory bandwidth difference between quad ddr3 and dual ddr4?

P.S. I got my HP Z420 (Mint condition) with E5-1607, 8GB RAM, 250GB HDD, Windows 10 Pro and low end Video card for $209 shipped from a Microsoft Authorized Refurbisher on clearance sale......so a person looking hard might be able to do better.

For Ryzen 1600X the CPU core is going to be stronger than Xeon E5-1650, but the Xeon has quad channel DDR3 1600 and Ryzen only has dual channel DDR4 2400/2667.

Do we know if Ryzen's memory controller will accept OC RAM? (The reason I am asking is because quad channel DDR3 1600 has the same memory bandwidth as dual channel DDR4 3200, but with tighter timings)

I think a 3930K would be your answer. E5-1650 is pretty much the same as a 3930K, and there should be plenty of benchmarks of that chip floating around the web. A decent choice for $400+GPU+SSD.

Nope, not built yet. Saw the CPU listed and grabbed it. Next on the shopping list is an x99 Mitx MOBO, M.2 SSD(probably 512gb Samsung 950 Pro.. i love mine) and a stack of DDR4. My wife is in publishing, I'm not sure exactly what software they are using. I know some of the scripts they run in Excel kill i7 equipped laptop they provided and make it virtually unusable for minutes at a time. This is probably overkill but I know the software can take advantage of the cores and I'm not worried about single threaded performance. Dang thing is only 85w.. 1.0v. Should be able to keep it cool with a H80 or the like.

Cool. Would you interested in doing a write up once you get the project started? I'd love to see the build and the performance benchmarks for your stated application(s). I've been thinking about putting together a MP home server. Like to see what others are doing.
