Best place to buy domain names and hosting?

Wife needs a new domain name and some hosting for her site etc. It's not going to be intensive place, just a sole proprietor accounting firm.

Do we just get on GoDaddy or something? We are in Vancouver, BC, Canada if that makes any difference. Did some reading but all of the reviews just look like ads to me.

Thanks!

How much data are we talking about?
Must be encrypted I am guessing as well?
Mainly for files, or is there gonna be some kind of a front-end?

Not sure how much data. Probably not a huge amount as she is just one person with a few dozen clients.

It will be mostly for files. She will need some sort of homepage though just to show people she's a real person, etc.

Encryption makes sense to me.

Not a fan of Godaddy, they condone animal poaching, and they also were for SOPA. Check out Namecheap instead.

For hosting there's tons of providers, I can't really recommend any specific ones, just beware of the ones that sound too good to be true as they probably are. ex: unlimited storage for $5/mo. It's literally physically impossible to provide that.

Depending on your needs a dedicated server may also be an option, gives you more control. OVH sometimes has deals that are super cheap and their data centre is in Quebec.

Ok thanks, was not aware of that GoDaddy stuff. Will check out Namecheap.

Dedicated server sounds like too much work right now. So for hosting, is like ten bucks a month good?

Thanks for the help guys.

I like Namecheap for domains. Used to host nearly 100 sites there when I was a web dev, they were fantastic all around. I have maybe a dozen these days & still use Namecheap.

wait a minute, I thought you were in Ontario.

We ended up

I was. Moved back to Vancouver a little while back. Missed it too much!

Thanks for the help so far guys! We bought the .com and .ca for the name of her business through Namecheap. Was easy enough. Bought the premium DNS for the .com though not exactly sure what that means.

Now we just need to figure out the hosting...

Edit: oh also need design I guess? Like WordPress or Squarespace?

Curious how they condone an illegal activity. Not arguing, but would like to know the source if you have it.

Basically the CEO is a trophy hunter. That's part of the issue, it actually is NOT illegal in some places. Though I think he may have left recently so not sure if it's the same CEO anymore. Either way something like that kind of leaves a bad taste in my mouth and it takes a long time to forgive a company. But even the poaching stuff aside, they were for SOPA, that's almost just as bad.
