Hypocrisy of Republicans on MLK Day

Commodus

It's Martin Luther King Day, which means one thing: Republicans paying lip service to an activist who they clearly don't understand, and who would oppose everything they do if he was still alive.

For example, VP Pence laid a wreath at MLK's memorial, touting his dream of a country where all men are created equal. This is the same VP that wasted public money to make a showy objection to black men protesting racist police violence at football games.

Then there's Rep. Steve King, who's touting MLK but has endorsed racial profiling, touted the superiority of "Western civilization" and had a Confederate flag on his desk until a few months ago.

And of course, there's President Trump. Almost all presidents have done community service on MLK Day since it became official in tribute to the actual spirit of what MLK intended. Trump? Oh, hell no -- he's playing golf. All you get from him is a token retweet of the White House.

When do we get a broad base of Republicans who actually respect what MLK wanted instead of taking a massive dump on his memory?

No of course not, they are just doing it for the pictures. Their actions show they are not for equality in any way. I'm not saying democrats are perfect, because of course they aren't, no party is in any way. But modern day Republicans blatantly show they only care about rich white people and have zero interest in anything or anyone else.

Putting a wreath on MLK's memorial is certainly better than Pence taking a piss on it or completely ignoring it. Symbolic gestures matter and it is correct that Pence did this. He is representing the office of VP in this duty, not the Republican party.

Symbolic gestures only really matter to the simple minded...so...their base. Well played Mr. Pence..well played.

Anyone with 2 brain cells should see through such charades.

As long as they're not gay, because, ew.

Seeing as if the Repub Party and Donny Trump plays host to all of the racist/nationalist organizations in the nation and rely on them for their dependable voting habits and seeing as if the Repub Party obviously represents the wishes and desires of the very wealthy yet requires the votes from their working class constituents to stay in power, the party by default really is the Party of Hypocrites.

There's simply no way to refute those facts of life.

While technically not part of the administration, what about Sheriff Clarke?! 🙂

Reefer madness is the only thing that can explain it-

The sad thing is, many of those on the political right (and some on the left) would balk at some of MLK's ideas if they bothered to look at more than one or two quotes.

For example, he said the biggest threat wasn't overt racists, but the "white moderate" -- those who are obsessed with maintaining order over seeing justice, the ones who say they want to improve the black community's conditions but conveniently think that whatever has been done so far is enough.

In the modern era, these are the people who try to portray Black Lives Matter as a threat to society, rail against kneeling football players, attack diversity campaigns and claim that institutional racism is over. Mind you, I wouldn't call them moderates -- they're more like thinly-veiled racists who are desperately trying to suppress the actual change needed to make a difference.

Whereas progressives endorse and have implemented deliberate and systemic racism, and give it the name affirmative action.

If we rely on King's standard of judging men by the content of their character and not the color of their skin, then it stands to reason he would be as displeased with democrats as he would republicans.

No.

Wow, a minor attempt at making amends concerning one tiny result of racism, is racist. As always, it's the acknowledging of racism that's racist. Stay classy.

Doesn't AA mean discriminating on the basis of race for the purposes of hiring and college admissions?
