Question are video card prices headed down yet?

If AMD and Nvidia keep prices artificially higher, they will just hurt the uptake of their higher end GPUs and with time, the average impoverished gamer will learn to accept games with lowered graphical settings. Game developers may also start optimizing their games to run better on the relatively cheaper GPUs. Or more gamers may move to consoles. AMD and Intel beefing up their iGPUs would spell even more trouble for Nvidia. It is in Nvidia's best interests to get more of their RTX hardware in the hands of gamers rather than miners.

It's still very profitable if you have cheap electricity, just that ROI of new cards at their current prices is getting long. Difficulty is only very recently starting to flatten out.

Are you implying a company and its shareholders might not want to squeeze every last drop of profit out of the here and now, and do some longer term thinking?

Unfortunately, I believe thinking like that went out of fashion ages ago.

That approach has never been popular or fashionable. It's arguable whether there's more of it today than there used to be. I personally doubt it. Many companies that persistently ignore the longer view end up going out of business and are forgotten.

The low end will see its prices drop. Selling 10 cards at $ yields more profit then selling 1 card for $$$. The 6500xt will likely be the first to drop to MSRP and then below $200.


However, on the high end, both companies now see a high end card that has performance 1% better then the average card can sell for. So the high end will continue to sit around $3000.
 
I am still waiting for the price drop, which might not happened as most have said here.. Been looking for two sub $300 card for a year so I can upgrade both mine and my kids systems.

We both have RX 560, and it is getting taxed when I tried to play more demanding games. Heck, my kid played Bless Unleashed a MMO and the 560 performance just dropped to slow motion!

The 6500 XT is pretty available.... yeah you're pretty much better off waiting unless you're willing to go to 400-450 for the 3050/6600.
 
If Nvidia/AMD want continued widespread adoption of high-end gaming hardware after mining dies, then prices will have to come way down. Of course PC enthusiasts have no price limit and they are automatic day one buyers of the best GPU at any price, so they will continue to be exploited successfully. But without miners to buy everything up, GPU companies will have to lower prices to offer products to the vast majority of consumers, including high-end buyers. Enthusiast buyers aren't high-end buyers. Enthusiasts are just as mindless and mouth foamy as miners are and will gladly steal from their own mother to buy an RTX 4090 tie for $5000.
Enthusiasts used to be in the same category as high-end buyers, but that has changed. High-end buyers have been well priced out of the best GPUs, but they used to buy them at $5-700. Now they cost $1500 minimum and $3000+ is coming with the 4000 series. Anyone who isn't rich doesn't spend $3000 on a GPU, unless you are in the new enthusiast crowd. Nvidia has isolated the most extreme buyers and has targeted them with insane prices. Can't blame them really, so long as they offer a good upgrade in that $5-700 range then everyone else should be happy.
 
I noticed that Newegg hasn't done a new GPU Shuffle lately.

I wonder if they've successfully jacked up retail prices to the point where excessive demand is no longer a problem, or supply has improved due to miners dumping their used parts on eBay.
 
Guys, I am now wondering... if Intel manages to sell their GPU by Q2 or Q3, is possible to see the prices going down?

Also, I saw that some chinese brands wants to release some GPU with PoverVR tech, it might help with the decrease in prices?

The difference is valuable metals and diamonds can be used for jewelry or in industrial applications. Crypto valutas, not so much.

I don't know about Newegg, but my local Microcenter is selling, or really trying to sell, 3080 12GB and Ti cards for anywhere from $1650 to $2000. The ones in stock are all lower end Zotac models and they are staying on the shelves for multiple days.

Intel said that they were only releasing 4 million discrete GPU's this year. Compared to what AMD and Nvidia are pumping out, it's just a drop in the bucket.

Amusingly, Apple's new APU's might take more market-share away from Nvidia and AMD than Intel will this year.

Same with Newegg. I got an email Friday night about some 6800s(?) clicked link on Saturday they were still in stock. I think they were $1800 to $2200
Seems like that cost is too high for miners and consumers. Power is slowly switching back to the consumer.

This is how much they have to cost to stay on the shelf a normal amount of time. People are paying this all day every day.
 
Yeah, my local microcenter has full shelves of videocards. The prices are high, but it seems that we've found new supply/demand equilibrium point. We have supply, just not enough to bring the prices down. Again, if ETH goes PoS mid summer we could be looking for video card price crash by the end of the year.

Right now they're still in stock in the same quantity as yesterday, and they've been there for a week. Probably doesn't help that there are prebuilt systems with 3080 10GB cards in them for $100 (5600x based) to $500 (5900X based) more.
