dunno if ASUS messed it up or the correct insider material directly linked/related to AMD.
I think someone at Asus probably just copy-pasted from Alder Lake or something. I wouldn't read much into it.
 
Could also be related to binning, one CCD binned for high frequency, the other for low leakage. Calling the resulting cores P- and E-cores may still be an ASUS PR thing though.
 
Apparently the handheld PC industry is going full speed ahead, despite no OFFICIAL world from AMD on 7040U SKUs yet.
Base clock is apparently 3,3GHz (6800U and 7735U both have it at 2,7GHz), hence 5GHz boost or slightly higher seems very likely.
Yeah Aya have access to PHX too.

Going to be a few months before either company actually launches something with PHX though.

Asus aren't that clever. It's employee laziness. I expect better from people on Wendell's website using the term "fake cores" when describing Intel products as if a core must be dual threaded to be a core.
 
ETA Prime has a early preview of Phoenix R9 7940HS/Radeon 780M in a ASUS TUF design.

DO NOTE: Early drivers/BIOS, some performance is wildly inconsistent, also crashes while allowed to go to 80W.


Seems to clock at 2800MHz in Furmark at a 45W package and he also successfully overclocked it to around 3100MHz somehow. Anyway, keep in mind, it's all on beta drivers/software.

Doesn't seem much faster than the 680M test he did with the 6800H. The only common game with the same settings in the two videos is Fortnite, and even though the map is different, the 780M and 680M deliver similar FPS.

Crashing may be related to the DDR5 memory appearing in current gen laptops, crashing on Raptor Lake systems using DDR5-5600 SODIMMs is extremely common too. Jarrod made a community post about it on YouTube a couple of weeks ago.

Yep, ETA substituted the stock RAM (DDR-5 4800) with his own modules (DDR5-5600) so it's entirely possible there are some issues with that, especially with not final BIOS and firmware. Possibly one of the reasons why Phoenix got apparently a slight delay.

No, it already "launched". Availability seems to have slowed down though.

In Germany one model by ASUS is already readily available, but originally this should have been the case for all 8 models by late March/early April so there has been a delay of some sort at the last second.

Very slim availability. Any news about U models? I think many are waiting for some dGPU free models that are cheaper than this.
 
U was said to be available in May, probably late part of the month. Same source saying that HS line would have been available for end of April.

AMD has not officially announced Phoenix U.

As for the Lenovo laptop... I was wrong... it uses Dragon Range actually.

Yes, it was not announced. I was referring to the fact that the same sources telling about the delay of Phoenix HS said that Phoenix U would have been announced 1st of May with availability later in the month. How trust we can put in these rumors, it is another question. Anyway, as there are already some tests floating around, and some products being hyped (including the ASUS Ally) even if not in May, the actual availability should be not so far away as many may think.
 
Thing is that a wave of hand held devices using U SKU surely eat a big chunk of the first batches :




Acer laptop offering is expected for july, if anything this APU will hardly find its way on affordable laptops :

 
Ryzen chips in laptops and affordable don't fit together in one sentence anymore since Rembrandt/Zen 3+.

Asus hand held device is at 700$, a laptop without fancyness shouldnt be lot more, eventually RMB will be used as entry level laptops, guess that AMD could had fabbed a lot of the latter at good prices since TSMC 7nm capacitiess fell recently at 50 or even 40% utilisation rate.

Asus ROG ALLY looks pretty promising. Would It be a good replacement to my i5-9300H + GTX1650 + 24GB DDR4 + 1.5TB SSD? Probably not worth It.

Advantages:
1. CPU performance would see a massive improvement, at least ST +50% and MT +150%
2. very portable, small form factor, light
3. low power consumption
4. Compatible with Steam etc.

Disadvantages:
1. IGP won't see any significant improvement compared to GTX1650, but higher Vram allocation could help.
2. I honestly doubt It will have a long battery life during gaming, but this is not that important for me.
3. 16GB DDR5 + 512GB SSD, although MicroSD slot is available
4. No kickstand
5. Windows 11 😛
6. Need to buy additional Dock for It to connect to monitor, keyboard etc.
