Firefox 53: no support for Windows XP or Vista

Mozilla plans to end mainline support for the Microsoft operating systems Windows XP and Windows Vista with the release of Firefox 53 in March 2017

We plan to eol XP/Vista by first moving those users out to ESR 52. Once 52 merges to aurora, we should land changes to the stand alone installer to prevent install by XP and Vista users. Initially there shouldn't be an issue with running but eventually we'll import a system dependency that will break browser startup.
 
atleast that firefox will still be useable with windows xp but with esr which i have used before to see what it was it i worked well.
 
Guess my XP Box will stay on Firefox 47.0.1 ... some extensions in it, will not load in FF48 and since it is an older Pentium 4 system it probably would not like a multiprocess Firefox anyway.
 
Vista extended support is ending in April, so it makes sense for Mozilla to not waste time supporting an OS that won't have its own support any longer.

Eh, not that it was any loss to me, but Google ditched Chrome for Vista a while back already...

Yep... not really sure why anyone is still on XP (or vista), seems those people should use linux if they want security updates.
 
Because it works just fine for my needs. And it get the extended Point Of Sale security updates. I also have a laptop running Windows 10 Home 64 Bit for any locations that might insist on not working with XP .. Eventually my desktop computer will get an upgrade and when it does it will be to a nice I7 based unit.

Is this for a business? If so, you do know that XP Point of Sale systems do NOT meet PCI DSS anymore right?
 
No it is not a business. But that reg key does let you get security updates for a little while longer.

Mozilla should of ended support for XP already IMHO, all those resources wasted on a dead OS, I sometimes wonder why they waste resources when they could be using all their resources on valid Operating Systems ie Linux Distros, Win7/8/10 owners.

I'm still using Vista, which is and will be getting full security updates (if nothing else) through April of next year - not the same as XP at all... (And when I do move on ≤ 4/17, it'll almost certainly be to 7, just to "stave off" 10 (a) with the hope that it will go away by the time 7 becomes unworkable for one or another reason (not likely, I realize), or at least (b) by that time, there'll at least be a complete complement of proven mods to beat it's less pleasant aspects into definite and confirmed submission...)

FTFY. Sorry, that's a huge pet peeve of mine that I just couldn't let go uncommented on...😉
 
As much as I liked 7, 10 is just fine, has some minor quirks, but will last MUCH longer than 7 did, and runs better than Vista or 7, as wastes notably less space than either OS. The OS updates are going very well, and the fresh install process has been greatly improved.

Sorry to get OT, but upgrading to an aged OS is a waste of time and money, without a ligitimate reason for doing so.

As far as dropping support, FF has always been a free browser, and as has been said, the support it has maintained up until now has been very generous.
 
'bout time! These "long live XP" users, are they all part of the Flat Earth Society too?

Edit: I upgraded a relative's Vista Home Basic laptop, to Win7 Pro 64-bit not too long ago, and swapping in an SSD. Works great now, much better than it ever did with a 5400RPM HDD and Vista, especially with only 2GB of RAM.

Vista was a pig, and needs to be put out to pasture, as soon as possible.

Well, I'm certainly sorry I didn't switch over when Win7 could be had a lot cheaper than it is now, but I just kept putting it off, and then what struck me as a fairly sudden disappearance of discounted pricing took me by surprise and at that point, I figured I'd just wait until I was forced to switch. I really don't do much that makes the slower response painful, with even my "slow" old SSD as the OS drive...

Well, even though its really irritating aspects (telemetry that can't officially be turned off*, forced updating) can be tamed to one degree or another, Microsoft's heavier-than-usual-handed approach with it just pisses me off, which is a legitimate enough reason afaic for me to avoid it until I have a specific, actual "need" to deal with it... And while I wouldn't move to Win7 for just an extra year, for example, that'll be updated through 2020, iirc?, which is long enough to make it worthwhile, again afaic...

Just installed Windows 10 Insider Evaluation copy 14946.rs_prerelease.161007-1700 a few hours ago.

Not sure why people cling to old OS's these days when they are probably updating their phones, etc.
 
just used firefox while on windows xp and saw this so going to think about getting rid of firefox and replacing it with opera which is more advanced and faster::-

Vista was ok in my experience (I did have 4GB of ram and modern hardware at the time). I used it a lot for beta games testing and personal use, SP packs fixed a lot of issues and more importantly companies eventually started to make drivers for Vista and their hardware, not to mention all those companies shipping Vista with minimal hardware specs did not help its reputation. However every OS has an EOL date and Vista is next on the list.

This will probably be corrected by Mike64 😉 , but WGAS 🙂 .
