GSoC 2026: The Org Applications Phase (“Org Apps”) opens on January 19: With the start of the “Org Apps” phase (January 19 – February 3, 2026), the Google Summer of Code officially begins. 🌞⛱️ During this period, open-source organizations apply to be mentored as projects at the GSoC. This is where it will be decided which projects—for example, from the Linux, graphics, infrastructure, or tooling communities—will be able to specifically develop new features, fix bugs, and onboard new contributors during the summer.

Dear Community, 🙂

during this period, open-source organizations apply to participate in GSoC as mentoring projects. This phase determines which projects—for example, from the Linux, graphics, infrastructure, or tooling communities—will be able to focus on developing new features, fixing bugs, and onboarding new contributors during the summer. ( See https://summerofcode.withgoogle.com/programs/2026 )

A look back at last year: #GSoC Google Summer of Code :: with 1,000 open-source organizations ::

A few facts and figures from last year (2025):
  • 15,240 applications from 130 countries (+130% compared to the previous record)
  • 23,559 project proposals (+159% compared to 2024)
  • 185 organizations from all areas of the open-source world

This phase determines which projects will receive new features, infrastructure, and developer resources this summer.

What happens now] influences:
  • which tools will receive new features in 2026/27
  • which bugs will be addressed
  • which roadmaps will be accelerated
  • ...and which open-source projects will grow or stagnate

Even if community members don't participate directly: 👉 We will use the results later.

Tua res agitur The Google Summer of Code is far more than an internship or mentorship program. Everywhere you look, in the many projects and mentorships, our shared vision is being further developed: Free Software, openness, and collaboration. Many applications we use daily – GIMP, Inkscape, Krita, Blender, FreeCAD, and many more – were improved or enhanced with new features this summer as part of the GSoC. The Google Summer of Code🌞⛱️ hosts many of our favorite projects. What happens here often directly impacts our daily work and our tools.

And not only that: in my opinion, it also reflects our ideas of collaboration, open development, and, of course, innovation, as they occur in open ecosystems (like the open-source movement) – in short, everything that continually inspires us at all open source projects

From this perspective, GSoC is a great event – it's full of good things – for us... benefits for everyone... 😀
