I would preferably keep it as Portable Storage and not adopted/formatted as Internal Storage only that's locked to the device.

How do I configure Huawei nano memory card to my liking?
Such as moving Photos and Videos to Memory Card as default, plus still backs up to Google;
and certain Apps moved to Memory Card and/or future App downloads&installs.
 
You should probably check the owners manual for your phone. Their proprietary format may be different enough that it isn't treated exactly like an sd card.
