Now this is funny. Bungie put Marathon on sale on Steam (20%)... but the player count on PS5 must be so low they didn't bother on PS5.

I had tried Marathon during the free period (on Steam, of course) and though I wasn't a fan of the art style (that's putting it mildly), the FPS aspects of the gameplay were top notch, in my view. I think this is a game which has a wider appeal to traditional (boomer shooter?) M&K players, which I certainly had been. The time I had spent honing those ASWD & mouse skills during Quake & Unreal means any controller based FPS game will be unlikely to appeal to me.

I think that's what's happening on the low player penetration on the PS platform. I just can't imagine playing this game with a controller on any competitive level.

It's been reported Sony's current and new CEO, Titoki, has said the new plan is to "fail early and fail cheaply."

That makes perfect sense given Sony's apparent panning for live service gold by launching 10 of them hoping one hits big. Marathon's problem isn't necessarily if they're selling games, but the concurrent player base, which requires at the very least a steady 20K - 30K to justify the ongoing costs of keeping it live. If it dips below that, which Marathon has, the game is at risk of going into a death spiral.

Not that Sony needs any advice from me, but I'd just make the game free to play. Either you can maintain the 20K+ average or you can't. If the latter, just shut it down, move on, and just blame the misguided venture on the prior admin and throw them under the bus.
