video playback issue on external monitor only

Hi all,

I hope you can shed some light on this new issue.
I have a 2 month old Dell monitor connected to my laptop and this week all of a sudden a movie will freeze for 3 to 4 seconds every 4 or 5 minutes but only on the monitor. If I disconnect and watch on the laptop alone it does not do this...

is this a wiring issue? I've had the monitor new for 2 months and this issue just appeared....the hdmi wire is old though...not sure if that is the issue?

First thing would be to replace the HDMI cable you're using, try to use the smallest length cable as possible.

Next thing would be to open up a system resource monitor and look at your CPU and GPU usage during this to see if there are any spikes causing the freezing/slow down.

playing more random movies it seems to only have this freezing effect on some of them....im guessing its the type of file thats causing the problem?

Could be CPU or GPU depending how the file is being rendered and the bitrate, and your hardwares built in media decode abilities.

Try switching media players first, MPV, MPC-HC, VLC are ones I try.
