It's all pointless gee whiz bullshit. If you told me I could download a libre app that magically made all my dumb stuff smart, I'd play with it for a couple of days, think "neat", then get bored and go back to the way I've always done stuff, because the smart shit actually increases my work by having to twiddle knobs, and uses more energy than what I do now. I can't think of a single case where "smart" stuff would make my life better, in even a trivial sense.

Or you like playing with this stuff. I replaced my dead pool pump. Was going to keep using the same pool timer but noticed it just switched one pole of the two pole which is not a good thing. A new pool controller of questionable quality was more expensive then me getting a smart socket + Eaton definite purpose 2 pole contactor. So I have HA, which is already running as a VM, control the smart socket and the socket turns the contactor on and off. I schedule the pool pump to run in the middle of the night when electricity is cheapest.

And now I have the pool pump automation disabled since pool season is over.

How do you judge distance from an object or tell if there is something in front of it you'd rather not mow (like your cat)?

The short answer is that it appears you don't (unless you actually get out and follow it around).

They need cameras. If DJI can do it from a $300, 259 gram drone from 8km away (in FCC mode), surely these yahoos should be able to do it from your front or back yard and make it work.
 
After you've mowed your yard from the comfort of someplace not behind your mower and cleaned up the cat parts, you still have to wander around with the trimmer and edger.

A lot of this stuff just seems like stupid gadgets to me, and not very well thought out. A semi autonomous device with a 4 horsepower motor and a 2' steel blade spinning at a thousand rpm's just isn't a good idea.

I'm every bit as lazy as the next guy, but sometimes we just have to man up and mow our fkn lawns.

It has to be presented as "it will look pretty much like this", with a three paragraph disclaimer. Every set of architectural plans I've ever seen has had a disclaimer about dimensions, variation's, and the possibility that it's not even close to reality.

Lived through "looks good on paper" plans. HVAC was usually the biggest culprit * if i remember correctly.

I was never handed a set of plans that accounted for HVAC. There would be a little box showing where the register would go, and that location rarely had anything to do with reality. I had two or three that it was impossible to run duct work in and it was obvious from the first glance at the plans. Thank God for minisplits.
